DO I NEED A REFERRAL?

As all our doctors are specialists you will require a referral from your GP or other medical practitioner so you get a rebate from Medicare. We will require your referral prior to making an appointment so when your doctor has decided to refer you to our practice they will need to get your referral to us with your up to date mobile phone number on it. When your referral is received by us we will send you an SMS asking you to call us to make an appointment.

Please note: A new referral from your GP is required every 12 months.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

When you call to make an appointment following your text notification we will book you in with the doctor you have been referred to or if no suitable timeframes are available you will be offered an appointment with an alternative paediatrician. If you are a new patient to our practice we will then email you out an information sheet about the doctor you will be seeing (including fees that will be charged) and a consent form to be completed and returned via email prior to your appointment.

Please note: No appointments are made via email or online

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?

Hobart Paediatric Group is a private paediatric practice and a fee will be charged per visit. Part of this fee will not be rebated by Medicare and this gap can differ depending which doctor you see. You will be advised of our fees in the doctor introduction letter forwarded prior to your appointment or please ask our friendly reception staff.

HOW CAN I PAY?

You will be asked for payment on the day of consultation. You can pay by cash or credit or debit card. We are able to take gap payments by phone if required for hospital out of pocket expenses.

CAN I CLAIM A MEDICARE REBATE?

A Medicare claim can be lodged at the time of consultation for processing into your Medicare registered bank account overnight

DO I NEED TO HAVE PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE?

No. As patients at our practice are outpatients, your private health insurance is not required as Medicare will rebate for outpatient services. Private health insurance will only be required for newborns admitted to the Special Care Nursery at a private hospital.

Any health fund billing is “No Gap” and accounts will be sent directly to your fund for payment.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY APPOINTMENT?

You will need to bring your child, Medicare card, Blue Health Record Book and any relevant reports or assessment reports you may have. If your child does not attend the appointment no Medicare rebate can be claimed so if you wish to discuss issues without your child being in the room please bring along a responsible person to stay in the waiting room with your child while you speak with the doctor. If parents are separated we would appreciate being advised so both parents can be communicated with.

Please note: Our Hobart Private offices are located within the Maternity Unit and the waiting area is quite small so please bring essential people only for appointments.

COULD MY PAEDIATRICIAN RUN BEHIND SCHEDULE?

Our paediatricians have often visited 2-4 hospitals before starting in rooms, and are also committed to providing emergency services during the day as required by Calvary, Hobart Private and The Royal Hobart Hospitals.

Our paediatricians also provide phone support for general practitioners when they have a concern that requires immediate advice.

We are always deeply appreciative of the understanding shown by our patients and their families when sometimes these competing demands make us run a little late.

Our secretaries will do their very best to inform you if our timing is a bit out and there may be delays in your child being seen.

WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL MY APPOINTMENT ?

If you need to cancel your appointment your early advice would be appreciated so we can offer other patients the opportunity of coming earlier than their booked appointment which helps reduce lengthy waiting times. Missed appointments or appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. We will send a reminder SMS the day prior to your appointment which needs to be confirmed by replying “Y” or declining by replying “N” otherwise please call us on 6278 8600 to rebook. Your prompt reply saves us from having to ring you to confirm your appointment.

CAN I CONTACT MY DOCTOR OUTSIDE MY APPOINTMENT?

Please feel free to call us, send an email, or leave an answering machine message if you call out of hours. Our reception staff are always happy to assist and will endeavour to follow up with you by the next business day.
If you require medical advice, please speak with our reception staff to arrange an appointment to see your paediatrician and please note that medical advice will not be provided via email. Messages to your doctor can be taken by reception but please be aware that all our doctors have many patients and it is simply not possible for them to be immediately available.

WILL MY GP KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AT OUR CONSULTATION?

Your doctor will forward a summary of any consultation to your GP and you will usually be emailed a copy of this so everybody is aware of any issues raised during consultations

WHAT IF I NEED TO REBOOK ANOTHER APPOINTMENT?

Most patients are rebooked for review shortly before a new script is required. If your doctor has advised they are happy to provide a script without a consultation please give as much notice as you can to allow your doctor time to write a script as all our doctors also have work commitments elsewhere and are not at our rooms on a daily basis. We also may need more than one appointment to make a medical assessment or diagnosis on your child. Our doctors have quite limited availability so if you need to change your appointment please do so as early as possible.

WHAT DO I DO IN AN EMERGENCY?

We do not provide an after hours service, so in case of emergency please contact your GP After Hours service or Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department or call an ambulance in cases of extreme medical emergency. If your child is admitted to hospital please advise medical staff that you are a private patient of one of our paediatricians so they can forward details of the admission and/or treatment or contact us for medical information if required.

IS MY PRIVACY IMPORTANT?

As a medical practice your privacy is highly regarded by us. At times it may be necessary to obtain or share some information with schools or other health care providers so that our doctors can gain a wider knowledge of your child's medical, social and family history to ensure the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment. If you do not wish this to occur please advise us of this on your consent form.
